In the late 1990s, platinum was trading close to the price of gold which created a strong interest in the noble metal.  In 1997, the U.S. Mint added Platinum Eagles to complement its Gold Eagles and Silver Eagles. Platinum Eagles were well received, and in 1998, the first full year of production, 133,000 of the 1-oz Platinum Eagles were minted.

Investing in platinum coins and bullion is easy, even easier these days with companies offering their selection of coins on the internet.  The most popular type of platinum coins are the government issue 1 oz coins, namely the US Mint Platinum American Eagle, Canadian Platinum Maple and Australian Platinum Koala.

Size Availability

While the 1 oz coin is the standard, the American Eagle, for example, is available in a number of sizes: 1-oz, half ounce, quarter ounce, and 1/10 ounce. Prices are in direct relation to the metal content, so a 1/10 ounce platinum American Eagle will sell for 1/10 the price of an ounce of platinum. The Australian Koala platinum coins go all the way down to 1/20 of an ounce, and all the way up to 10 ounces.  There is even a 1kg platinum coin which was produced with an original face value of $10,000, but was later changed to $3000 in future mintings.
